CENTRAL COAST v. RANDWICK
Saturday, 6th March, 2010
Joseph Banks Oval, Bateau Bay

Central Coast commenced their NSW Country Championship campaign with a wonderful performance last Saturday against Randwick. Despite the warm and humid conditions the local representative team put on a very creditable effort. Randwick won the trial by 25 points to 15 but with the scores level with 20 minutes to go either side could have won the contest.
Randwick brought their top team to the Coast so this made the Central Coast effort even more meritorious. Randwick took the early lead and had posted 2 tries in the opening 20 minutes. However in the middle section of the game the Central Coast team hit back with 3 tries to level the score well into the game. It was the perfect build-up to the NSW Country Championships in 2 weeks time when the local side takes on Central North in the first round at Woy Woy Oval on the 20th March. Coach Sean Tobin was extremely happy with the efforts of all his players. Lock Peter Steele was outstanding, while prop Luke Sheridan was strong as was five-eight Adam Carlisle and No.8 Emile Thomas. Tobin will have a very difficult task selecting his final team for the 20th March game. The Central Coast has the potential to go extremely well in this year’s NSW Country Championship. Randwick stalwart Jeff Sayle, in his comments after the game, was mightily impressed by the play of the local team and was all praise for the set pieces, the backline play and the structure of the Central Coast team. This is sure praise from one of the legends of Australian rugby.

The Central Colts played a 3-way trial against Rand wick and Illawarra in the lead up to the senior fixture. Central Coast was defeated by a slick Randwick Colts team and went down by 2 tries to the Illawarra team. The Central Coast Under 20’s played good rugby despite the losses and now have two weeks to gel the local players into a team that can defeat Central North Colts on the 20th March. The Central Coast team certainly has the players and Coach Greg Hawkings will be hoping he can mould these players in to a team that can go very well in the Championships.
