JUNIOR MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPION BEN GUEST
Local 17 year old Gosford Athletics middle distance & distance runner
Ben Guest this past Saturday claimed the Australian Junior Mountain
Running Championship Title after beating a quality field of runners at Mt
Majura in the ACT. He was able to beat local favourite and Australian
Junior Mountain Running Representative Scott Tomlinson by 28 seconds on
this very gruelling and challenging course as well as defeating all under
20 yrs competitors, they ran a 9km race which had a total gain in
elevation of 600 meters which was a two lap course of 4.5kms. This is the
most demanding running event anybody could participate in. Ben has been
preparing for this event for the past 6 months by running Kincumber Mtn
with his coach Kevin Wills and cross training with swimming at Forresters
Beach Indoor Swim Centre under the watchful eye of Leonie Talbot head swim
coach. The Australian course was designed to duplicate the World Course in
New Zealand which the race organizers managed to actually make the course
tougher according to the visiting New Zealand Runners that travelled here
to participate and prepare themselves for the world event in late
September. This was also a good opportunity for them to check out there
Australian opponents.

Gosford Athletes Excel at NSW Road Running Championships
Saturday 7th May the NSW Road Racing Championships was
run and several Gosford Athletics Club members returned with medals and 1
State Title. In the Under 18 Male Division 5km Ben Guest was 1st in 15mins
and 49secs with fellow team mate and training partner Matt Rando in 2nd
place only 4 seconds behind. Both these athletes are coming of a very
successful summer track season with Ben being chosen in the Athletics NSW
Emerging Athlete Program and Matt chosen to represent as part of the NSW
Team which was the winning team at the inaugural National U/18 Teams
challenge in Brisbane this past summer. This was a great result for both
athletes as they have just come back from a break in training.
In the Under 20 Male Division 8km
Gosfords Tim Page finished in 3rd Place 26mins and 11secs just getting run
down in the final 200m. Tim was very happy with his result and will be
looking to improve during the coming Cross Country Season. Tim also got
gold for being the 1st Country Athlete.
In the Under 16 Male Division Gosfords
Cameron Page finished in 3rd Place 12mins and 59secs with a fast finishing
Dave Mainwaring finishing just 10secs behind in 4th place, Dave Mainwaring
finished with a gold medal in the Country Division. Daniel Luther finished
in 13th place in his first state title race.
In the Under 14 Female 3km Renee
Mainwaring finished 5th with a time of 11mins 12sec.
In the Open Male Division Mark Warren
finished in 21st Place with a time of 33mins 20sec.
